steam vents at convectors

I was on a job today which needs all the vents replaced. the house has 10 recessed convectors with cast iron elements inside a sheet metal box is the basic idea. the homeowner years ago had the original covers discarded and fancy wooden ones made up. the problem now is that the covers are not removable. only an ornamental type sheet metal grille at the top and bottom. no access to the center area. i can reach down the top section and touch the 1/8" straight radiator vents and i'm confident that i can get new ones in there. my question is this: will i be doing any harm by raising the vents up 12" for easier access? I would do this by threading an 1/8" x 12" nipple into the convector, then a coupling and finally the vent. I know it's a good idea to raise main line vents above the main but what about the radiator vents in this situation. My concern was rust and sludge etc in the 1/8" nipple. it's a pretty small hole....
