i have a customer that i came to whose boiler was carbonized. very high co. I powerwashed boiler and took apart boiler.used my analyzer and co was down to 16 ppm. He has a dryer in the room and i figured that was the cause. When I got home it hit me that this was a natural draft boiler that was sidewall vented without a powerventer kit.
Will be calling manufacturer today. name was valiant. never heard of them before... To advise customer on either getting a power vent kit or b vent double wall chimney.

I never saw this done before and am wondering if that caused it to carbonize
Thanks

It must have a Field Controls or Tjernlund sidewall vent kit installed. May well be spilling flue gases into the basement this way.

However if you put a power venter on a boiler with a drafthood you may just kill your customer.

I think you mean the brand name was "Vaillant". Is this oil or gas?

There were also power vented boilers that had built in draft inducer motors in them made to side wall vent.

The ones we use to install were the Utica USC boilers. They used stainless pipe for the flue with a gasket and hose clamp at the joint. Nice boiler but as higher efficient models came around they disappeared.

If it has a draft hood either external or built into the jacket it is a atmospheric boiler designed to vent into a chimney. Without a vertical chimney to create draft it would spill exhaust in the room.

For boilers for connection to gas
    vents or chimneys, vent installations
shall be in accordance with Part 7,
    Venting of Equipment, of the
    National Fuel Gas Cede, ANSI
    Z223.1--Latest Edition, or applicable
    provisions of the local building
    codes.
Must vent into an approved chimney or vent designed for CAT I appliances meaning it must terminate above the roofline and is NOT intended for sidewall termination. This is a death trap as is and illegal. Sure, it can cause sooting, CO, equipment damage, etc.

Am I following this correctly......this is just vented out the side wall without power venting.....maybe "B" vent pipe stuck out the side wall.....and it is an atmospheric burner??

I checked with Valliant they have one employee left stopped manufacturing in us in 1996. Their only tech support passed away. The friendly employee sent me a manual and it seems clear this needs a regular chimney. The manual clearly states the ga-100 is a natural draft boiler and must not be connected to any mechanical draft system operating under positive pressure I guess that settles it leaving and need to build a chimney B vent
    thanks for all input
