Back when I first bought this house I had a DS-5 Delco steam boiler that was even larger and probably just as bad on oil.

My cat used to sleep on it whenever she got into the cellar. One day I went down to check on the old girl, I went down the stairs and checked the sight glass and found it at the right level. As my eyes went up the boiler I found the neighborhood tom asleep on top of the boiler. He had forced one of the cracked cellar window panes out and made himself at home. It was a very cold night so I left him where he laid and built a flap into that window pane the next day.

never saw a mouse in the cellar again as long as that old tom was around.

The expansion tanks were in up stairs closets to prevent them from freezing and close to the bathroom for the water supply float valve. Over flow pipe was run into the bathroom drain above the trap on a hand basin

    Oldest Burnham I've ever seen.

Good luck getting a new one to last even 1/4 of that.

Why do people keep 100 year old boilers? Grandma had an antique in the 70s & 80s and paid an absolute fortune in oil. Every time I'd suggest modernizing she'd point out her age and say she might not be around to reap the savings. So she paid huge bills for a long time. She lived to 94 1/2!

Why do people do anything they do?

You're asking a question not one person on this forum is qualified to answer.

There's about 100 feet of asbestos covered pipe in the basement and they won't replace it until its removed.

They are planing on abatement soon

Make sure installer is qualified on replacement of a gravity boiler or converting to forced circulation....high efficiency modulating condensing boiler would be perfect for this application....converting to gas too?
