Steam pipe insulation

It is time to get off my lazy **** and insulate my single pipe steam pipes. I'm thinking 1" thick?
How do I know what size to order? Do I measure external pipe diameter? Is there an FAQ for this. Thanks David

1" is the best value, most go for that thickness.
You need to know what pipe size you have to order correctly. The simplest way to do that is measure the circumference of the pipes with a cloth tape measure and use a conversion chart such as the iron pipe size one at:
