    Nicholas, do you know if that part of the city still has gas meters in the basement. Older set-ups had gas service thru basement wall without breaking ground. Punch a hole in that line, with frozen pavement above it, the gas may follow the old trench thru the basement wall. WAG. Service shut off in basement and the one before that maybe somewhere buried underground.

    I recall, some years back, reading of another incident in south residential Omaha area. Backhoe digging in back yard hooked NG line and just pulled enough to break the elbow in the basement of next house. Lady and child were standing at back door watching digging when their house exploded.
    My guess is that this happens all over the country with the old set up of basement entrances.
