Bottom Sludge

Hi All - I'm in the middle of repiping a 25-year old Utica and the nipple in the return tapping came loose. I figure I will replace it (it unscrewed fine) but I see that the bottom of the boiler has a thick layer of rusty gunk. Should I try to scrape it out somehow? Or let it be and wait until the repiping is done so I can try draining it out?

I'd use a wand to wash the boiler out while the return is apart.

Get all of that nasty stuff out while it's easy.

I use buckets my self as I have a partial dirt / concrete floor. It stinks to haul the water out, but the wand does work really well. I usually follow it with a quick skim just to be sure.
