installing new main vent

Our one-pipe system, originally coal fired, has no vents on the main. Planning to install one or two Gorton #2s. I'm all new to this, although I do know that the vents should be about six inches from the end of the main. Can some one tell me the best or most efficient way to tap into the main pipe and how to position the vent(s), that is, should they come off the side of the main, off the top, or.... Any help will be greatly appreciated!

There are typically several options for installing main vents. That being said it's hard to make a recommendation without pictures. Take pictures of the end of your main so we can see what you are working with. Make sure you include several feet of the main in your picture so we can see an overall view of things.
