I can't tell which of three aspects of this story I find most disturbing: 1 That a tech has sticky fingers and displays pretty darn creepy behavior; 2 that the client's home and children are under constant surveillance indoors, which I find a little creepy in and of itself; 3 that they are now apparently justified in the surveillance.
I'm glad I live way over here in Cleveland where nothing creepy ever happensTerry T

I warned my brother (who lives in Brookline) to be alert as to who services his system...0

A lot of people have cameras like this indoors.ttekushan said:I can't tell which of three aspects of this story I find most disturbing: 1 That a tech has sticky fingers and displays pretty darn creepy behavior; 2 that the client's home and children are under constant surveillance indoors, which I find a little creepy in and of itself; 3 that they are now apparently justified in the surveillance.

Normally it doesn't mean anything because no one checks the recordings and they get overwritten constantly. But, when something seems odd, they can go back and check the video which likely goes back a few days.
As you can see, it does come in handy especially when you have strangers in your home.

Didn't that guy who kidnapped those three girls and kept them in his cellar, one for 10 years live in Cleveland? That was pretty creepy.ttekushan said:I can't tell which of three aspects of this story I find most disturbing: 1 That a tech has sticky fingers and displays pretty darn creepy behavior; 2 that the client's home and children are under constant surveillance indoors, which I find a little creepy in and of itself; 3 that they are now apparently justified in the surveillance.

You can have an employee that would steal the eyes out of a blind man's head while he wasn't looking. I had a apprentice once that stole from everywhere. I had no idea. Years later, someone told me about it. How he stole a shotgun out of a house and threw it on the ground while we were there. Then, came back later to pick it up. I told my old dead boss about it before I left. He told me that he had no idea but had became suspicious of something when he lost a few long time customers after we had done work there. They were vague in their reasons for switching.
You never know when someone is stealing or cheating from you.
As far as the surveillance cameras, they probably bought it for the same reason most buy them. To record things like what they found. Someone wandering around in their house.
Be forewarned. Warn your employees. Don't wander around peoples houses. Surveillance systems are cheap. You never know where a camera is hidden and putting you on tape or CD. You can but a complete system at Costco.

We live in a surveillance society, and that genie is simply not going to go back in the bottle.
The question becomes one of who watches whom. I for one would far rather see homeowners and businesses watching themselves than becoming the subjects of all-seeing, all-knowing agencies (or even worse, of private contractors.)0 -
I'm surprised the discussion has kind of become one about cameras being disturbing rather than an HVAC guyr going through someone's stuff and peeing in their laundry being disturbing.
Seriously?

I once saw a guy peeing in the A/C unit on the roof of the building across from where I work.
It annoyed me because obviously the rain would wash it out over time, but while it's there it's highly corrosive to anything it touches including the condenser which is what he was aiming at.
But, this story takes the cake.Single pipe 392sqft system with an EG-40 rated for 325sqft and it's silent and balanced at all times.

I guess a little tongue in cheek and mild sarcasm has to be clearly labeled these days.
Seriously.
Deplorable behavior on the technician's part. I can't even begin to consider what his motivations could be. It casts every worker who goes into the home in a bad light.
To repeat, I find that behavior disgusting and incomprehensible.
And yes, Cleveland is precisely where the kidnapping was and other events. That was where the mild sarcasm and emoticon was applied.
These situations are deadly serious. Diffusion of our discomfort created by these news stories of pathological or near pathological behaviors on the part of people in a position of trust, by mild application of humor, clearly dilutes a proper sense of outrage.
In keeping with the tenor of the times, I join the clear call for swift retribution. If only others had, by any means necessary and available, closely observed this technician's pattern of behavior in the past, he would have been dealt with appropriately such that this situation could never have occurred to begin with.Terry T
