pilot outage on new state heater

I was at a job today where the customer just had a 50 gallon state water heater installed model#gs650ybrt300. the issue is the pilot goes out for no reason, often. The installing contractor has already replaced the honeywell control, and blocked part of the combustion air inlet opening, located at the bottom of the heater.I think the thought was that there may be negative pressure in the room blowing out the pilot. The main burner when it is on is a nice blue flame. The pilot will some times stay on for three weeks, and at other times will go out several times a day.The house has only one other gas appliance, the stove. The boiler is oil fired.Has anyone had a similar issue with this model heater? If so please post. Thanks to all.

Could be a few things. Most likely the FVIR screen is dirty. Although gas pressure could also be the cause. Can you determine what size is gas line is & what's connected to it?
Do you have gas pressure tester?
Start with the manufacturers troubleshooting guide. It should of been left with the appliance after the original installation.
