Just wanted to share an almost completed install. I was able to take all of the lessons from reading posts shared here and Dan's books and put them into practice. Without the "lurking" I have done here I would never have had the knowledge or, know where to find it if it was not for all the people that contribute to this community.
The boiler that was here was a 7 section 68 series, 778Sq. Ft. using one of the 2" take offs into basically no near boiler piping. The customers said they had lived with banging and water shooting out of the vents for 20 years. They were told it was normal and that's how steam works.
After measuring the radiation I came up with 481 Sq. Ft. with one room having a removed radiator that was in the attic. The main to the back of the house was 1 1/4 with a radiator added on the end that never worked. The main was pitched towards the end with no main vent or dry return. It filled with water and created all the issues with water and spitting vents.
We installed a MST 513 with a 3" drop header. Ran a new main to the back of the house 2" with a 1" dry return and vented it. The other main was a little odd in that 2 rads were piped counter flow and the other 2 had a dry return from the run out. I dripped the main and vented with a Gorton #2. The short main will get 2 #1. Replaced all radiator vents and the customers could not believe the difference. No spitting, no banging and no hissing vents. A beautiful thing.
Any constructive criticism is welcome. The system is up and running and I have to return Friday to do some final things such as getting rid of the band iron support and putting clevis hanger on the mains. Used a modified wand setup (thanks Gerry Gill) to clean the boiler out and will skim a few more times.
Myself and this customer have benefited greatly from all the knowledge here and for that I say THANK YOU!!!

Everything looks really good. The only thing I would say, if I had to find something to critique would be the long piece of pipe you have setup for skimming I guess? I think I understand why you've put such a long piece on there, but I'd be worried about someone dropping something on it. It's basically a long lever waiting to put some stress on that last section.0

Thanks for the kind words. The nipple for skimming will come out Friday when I am there to skim again.0

"There's never enough time to do it right. But always time for someone else to do it over".
No one will be having to do that over, because it was done right the first time.0 -
I'd love to see if there are any pictures of the old setup before he fixed it... isn't there a wall of shame for knucleheaded installations somewhere on this site?0
