Old steam part

Hey was on a job and took this home because I was so confused and excited as to what this is. If anyone has seen one and knows what it is let me know!! I'd like to know also what it's function was. Has a date of 1919

    Why did they take it out?
    Two-pipe Trane vaporvacuum system; 1466 edr
    Twinned, staged Slantfin TR50s piped into 4" header with Riello G400 burners; 240K lead, 200K lag Btus. Controlled by Taco Relay and Honeywell RTH6580WF

    KC nailed it. It's an air vent from an O-E System. It was mounted on the dry return and used an expanding post to close the vent, and the ball was a check valve that kept air from getting back in. This let the system go into vacuum as the coal pile burned down.

    The O-E, along with the Kriebel and the Richardson systems, was one of the few systems that would permit steam to enter the dry return.

    I believe O-E (like Milvaco and Sterling) was located in Milwaukee. Are you located in that area?

    Nope located in Massachusetts. There was two of these located on returns no longer hooked up. Boss had me take one and couldn't find out what it was..... So I tried here! Thanks very much for the info
