Mercury pot

My local hydronic/steam expert sent me the following:

Nicholas,
Here's something I've never seen. This is a one inch 'T' on a old hot water radiator system. Without taking apart I am guessing there is a baffle related to gravity heat. Top pipe is going to main floor radiator, bull side pipe to second floor radiator. Once I found a larger trap 2" plus with Mercury in it.
The Mercury pot sounds familiar.--NBC

Is that the same lazy water that keeps me wondering about running all that 3/8" PEX spaghetti out miles to the second floor and back, and all that pressure drop?

Is there part of that rule that says that if you pump it hard enough it will go fast enough, to overcome ANY pressure drop?

Then, there's all that high pressure, high speed pumping velocity. I wonder if that is conducive to Cavitation. That air has to be coming from somewhere.

Its a good thing they don't do it like the old guys anymore.
