Was down in the basement when the oil burner fired up. Noticed a small puff of smoke came out where the main pipe comes out the top. Is this a sign of trouble?

Sometimes.
Not usually catastrophic.

pics would help here. I wouldn't go out on a limb and say no problem. Could be delayed ignition, breech draft issue, flue collector issue, etc. Be safe, get it looked at0

Thanks when you say delayed ignition when I was in the basement I heard the burner kick on but it took at least 2 or 3 seconds before it actually fired. Think it may just be time for a new burner.0

The burner you have may just need to be tuned up, a good tech will figure out whats wrong and how to fix it. It might be best to put a new oil burner on the boiler but don't assume that without knowing why.

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Electrodes are cheaper than burners. What do you have for a unit and burner? Any pics?0
