If boiler furnace has an automatic water feed why do I need to keep adding water unless the handle is in the wrong position

The bigger (and more important) question is why does the boiler require frequent additions of water?
To answer your original question, the water valve could be in the closed position or the water feed could have failed. Is this a recent condition? Post a picture of the water feeder.0
