low pressure steam boiler - conditioning

Somewhere I heard after the heating season you should drain the boiler and refill adding a conditioner of sorts.

I'm not sure of what it is but is not chemical cleaning.

I thought you just add this stuff to new water and it would help in "cleaning" the system.

Anybody know the name of this stuff and where I can purchase it?

My boiler is a Peerless and is rated at 400K btu/hr.

Thanks

    off season boiler treatment

I would say that leaving the old water in the boiler, is most beneficial. some people will overfill the boiler, and boil it briefly to remove oxygen, before the final shutdown.

if you put chemicals in the boiler, then you would have to remove them before firing it up again.--NBC

    Steam Master

A few of us are using Steam Master tablets to raise the PH of boiler water into a benign region (PH 9.0) where it won't encourage corrosion. This is added to a boiler and left in the boiler for it's life.

If you decide to use this DO NOT FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS, most residential boilers only need one tablet not 4. Also whenever you add water to a boiler or add something to the water in the boiler, you should bring the boiler up to steam to drive off any oxygen in the water.
