Burnham has tested Beckett gas burners in oil-fired boilers

Folks, I didn't believe it either. But here it is, straight from Beckett:
http://www.beckettcorp.com/cg4apps/SpecGuide_CG4.pdf
At the moment, only certain V-8 and MPO boilers are on the list.
The question is, why did they say using anyone's gas burners in these boilers voids the warranty when we mentioned using Carlin's burners in them?
Bet we don't hear an explanation from Harper111................

Megasteam
You can add Megasteam to that list shortly. These are Beckett supplied specs, not boiler manufacturer. To learn more about this professional, click here to visit their ad in Find A Contractor.0 -
too late for me
I'm glad they finally saw the writing on the wall. If they had done this a few years ago I'd have a Megasteam instead of the Smith G8 sitting in my cellar, i contacted Burnham at the time but they did not want to hear anything about gas conversions.
Is there much of a difference between the Beckett and Carlin EZ-Gas gun?

CG4
CG4 comes with a welded flange and preset for the boiler it is designed for. The Carlin has an adjustable flange and can fit almost anything.

U.S. Boiler - Certification of Oil-fired Boilers
U.S. Boiler Company, Inc. designs and certifies our oil boilers to UL726, Oil-Fired Boiler Assemblies, and our gas boilers to ANSI Z21.13, Standard for Gas-Fired Low Pressure Steam and Hot Water Boilers. We have not tested nor certified our oil boilers for use with gas conversion burners. Because of this, we cannot condone the use of power gas burners on our oil-fired boilers. We have made a request to Beckett to remove all information from their literature and web site that refers to gas burners installed in Burnham brand oil boilers.

Too late
I saved it.
To "USB" (a.k.a. "Harper111"?)- people are going to convert your boilers anyway. You might as well get behind this like some other manufacturers have.
What are you going to do when increasing energy-efficiency standards outlaw the sale of atmospheric gas boilers like the Independence? "Blown Gas", as it's called in Europe, will rule. If you ignore this now, you'll have a LOT of catching up to do later, during which time you will lose a LOT of market share.
Think about it. The gas-fired MPO and MegaSteam could help save your company. All Steamed Up, Inc.

Burnham
Their non-commitment to the approval of a gas burner is the biggest reason why I don't use Burnham. Like Steamhead said, if that changes, I might decide otherwise.
My guy-behind-the-counter at our local Sid Harvey's had some interesting insight when we talked bout the CG4 today. He mentioned that Petro is installing Burnham boilers and Riello burners exclusively so that nobody else will be able to service them in the future. This is obviously bad for Beckett. So, what can Beckett do? Well, they can manufaturer a gas burner that will be packaged with Burnham, forcing Petro to use more of their burners.
As always...politics (appear to be) > than customer's best interest.0 -
Beckett
I just read through the CG4 manual. Looks very similar to the EZ-Gas burner. I do like the ability to mount the gas train on either side of the burner, and the orifice discs instead of Carlin's orifice tube. Our supplier said it would run a little more expensive than the Ez-Pro. Maybe we'll try this burner on a future job.0 -
What other boiler manufacturers
spec both oil and gas burners on the same residential boiler? I only know of Biasi and Energy Kinetics. Have there been any others to do this lately?

US Boilers
Thanks for your input, too few manufacturers are willing to participate anymore. I understand your position but not sure I agree. Have you considered approving gas burners on just the MPO/Megasteam? The Megasteam would be the best in class gas fired steam boiler as it is already with oil. Having the MPO convertible to gas would put it at an advantage to most triple pass oil boilers that are not,a consumer that just spent a fairly sizable amount on an MPO/Alliance/ODR card etc is loath to trash it when gas becomes available as it some point it will in all but rural areas. That feature is certainly a benefit to both contractor and consumer in making an MPO sale right now.To learn more about this professional, click here to visit their ad in Find A Contractor.0 -
I Find
That statement "Petro is installing Burnham Boilers and Riello Burners exclusively so nobody can service them in the future" RIDICULOUS!!!!
Basically what that Sid Harvey's guy is saying is that only Petro knows Riello burners..There was an error rendering this rich post.

Riello
If you can't beat the competition, confuse them!0 -
Are we talking gas or oil burner???
I've been out of the residential oil heat industry since 2010. But before that I saw that PETRO was using that combination in most of their installations for oil burning equipment.
If you are talking about oil then your parts guy is behind the times. I remember being at a meeting back in 1987 when PETRO moved to the Riello Mectron burner in hopes of confusing the other oil companies.
Here on Long Island I'd have to say that the most popular burner installed is the Riello R40 burner. Everyone puts them in. But you can't buy parts at Home Depot for them yet. There was an error rendering this rich post.

Petro
While it was certainly true that they sold primarily Riello, especially on Long Island. It no longer is, the hydraulic jack leaks and the lack of availability of product after Hurricane Sandy have shifted many people to BeckettTo learn more about this professional, click here to visit their ad in Find A Contractor.0 -
Efficiency
I just found out that Effective OCT 1, 2014 the EPA has raised the minimum efficiency for
Energy Star to 87% for oil and 90% for gas. This does not mean boilers
cannot be sold if the efficiency is less but just not sold with the
energy star label. Many cast iron boilers will not meet this new Energy Star guideline from many manufacturers.0 -
Its simple
You want an oil boiler buy an oil boiler
you want a gas boiler buy a gas boiler
you want a combination oil/gas by a buy one of those.
Done correctly on the approved boiler it will heat your home no differently than the other fuel…
If tour into clean air then thats great
if your into lower cost fuel [ AT THIS TIME ] thats great
I believe the true savings comes from proper installation, a well insulated home, and a well managed thermostat…..0 -
Others
Viessmann is the only company I know of that offers either a gas or oil chassis burner for the VBC-Vitola boiler.0 -
Intrepid
Recently spoke to a Slantfin tech support team member regarding purchasing an Intrepid for a residential application where I would install a gas burner from day one. They approve the carlin burner for use in their boilers. The stack "wet time" of a power burner is much less then an atmospheric.:NYplumber:0 -
