Pool heater

Hear is the situation I installed a weil McClain ultra 105,000 btu unit.

Pool area 40 x 15 x 5 = 22,500

Outside are being 65 & water temp being 75

From pool to heat exchanger 100 feet

From boiler to heat exchanger being 15 feet

Current boiler is 105,000 btu boiler H.E. Unit

Want temp of water 75 degrees with lowest water temp at 65.

The customer wants to just extend the swimming season just a few more weeks? Is this possible?

The boiler is used for home heat, but why not use it for pool heat if possible.

What kind of hex would you use, what size pump? What can the customer expect as far as heating the water 1 degree or even 1/2 degree an hour? He is in central NJ and just wants to swim to middle of September, not December.

    Heating Pools:

You do understand that 22,500 gallons of fresh water weighs 187,425# and will take 187,425 BTU's per hour to raise the water temperature in the pool by one degree?

A 105,000 BTU boiler is a little light in the nuts to be used as a pool heater.

That said, it will probably work fine. He might need some sort of a switch to stop the pool circulation. It probably has a indirect HX anyway. pumping pool water through that boiler would be condensation heaven.

    No! NO!

Never, ever pump pool water through a boiler! Most marine S/S brazed plate heat exchangers last just about 3 years. If it is salt pool water, you might get a bit less than two years. You need to get a titanium shell and tube HX. It is the only one that lasts. The pressure drop is not that bad and thus you can use the pool pump outlet on it. I have a daughter of one of the largest pharmacy chains in N.A. that uses the pool with waterfall to the end of November as the son has birthday party around the 28th when it is below freezing and a few inches of snow on the ground.

Just to give you an idea

My Hayward pool heater is 150000 btu. It raises the pool temp 1/2* per hour for 15000 gal pool. Which is not bad if you plan ahead, or maintain a desired temp constantly.

So ice is pretty close in his calculations.

Those figures are by the book, and dead on real world.

One biggie will they cover the pool when not in use? Evaporation is the heatloss killer in the pool world.

And yeah keep the pool water out of the boiler eh. Like Henry said titanium HX.
