I will discuss the 1" skim tap with the plumber. In the meantime, on the other issues related to water shooting up the condensate returns through the equalizer and Hartford loop and whether turning the Hartford loop 90 degrees, I have attached 2 more pictures showing one main riser from the boiler plumbed to a T and then split between the front and back of the house. According to the brochure I attached this morning, this is incorrect.

That's actually not bad. What you want to avoid is "bullheading" the tee, where you bring steam into the side of the tee and expect it to go both ways. But your tee is not bullheaded.

Skim the boiler properly before you do anything else. I bet that solves your problem.

Just FYI, your second picture indicates some asbestos that's been disturbed and currently friable. I'm looking at the 45

Too much of most additives will create problems like foaming. I would drain the boiler, refill it and then skim it again. I suspect too many additives (each time the tech showed up) may be a big part of the problem.

The tech never added anything. I asked him about squick when the boiler was first installed because that's what the plumber told me to do 35 years ago. Right now the water is clear and it's warm in Massachusetts, so things may be fine for a few days. The "install" is still under warranty and the plumber has always responded and skimmed it again, and truly wants the issue resolved.

Just to clarify, the skim tapping on an Independence is 1-1/4".

@Hatterasguy, yes in fact they can't get their manual correct. I've called them about this a few times. Having installed many of these boilers, I can tell you with certainty, it's 1-1/4" .

Any main vents on your system?

Yes, the contractor cleaned everything out and lowered the gas pressure. So far things seem to be working. There are 3 main vents and I added a second vent to a particularly large radiator in a room with 9 windows that my wife uses as an office. Although it has been unseasonably warm, the few times the heat has come on things seem to be working well.
