i have a steam boiler, when it shuts off and cools down- the radiator valve makes a loud sucking noise like a vacuum. any ideas what is causing this.

Yes.
That's the air going back into the system. Steam systems breathe, just like us. When steam forms, it expands 1,700 times, pushing the air out of the vents. Then the steam condenses and shrinks, and the air comes back in. Happens on every cycle.Retired and loving it.0
