2 pipe main vent

I have a main vent on a two pipe system that doesn't seem to vent (new Gorton 2)
It also doesn't get warm/hot as the other leg, in fact if I take the valve off it doesn't seem to have any effect on the heating. However I have noticed that if its on and the system runs for some time and I sut it down,..it sucks air for a short while. Is this normal?
Not two familiar with two pipe systems. I notice from Dan's books about having thermostatic traps on the outlets of radiators. Are they always supposed to be present In this house there are none (?)

Need pictures of the inlets, and outlets of the rads, and boiler piping.
If your system has no traps on the outlets of the rads, then it must be a true vapor system, needing only a couple of ounces to function.
If one of the returns is a different temperature from the other, then probably, steam is getting into the hotter return.
If you have a 0-3 psi gauge, you can see if your pressure is too high. A standard pressuretrol may be too inaccurate to keep the pressure where it should be.
In the springtime, you can take those valves off, and soak them in some vinegar, and penetrating oil, to get them working, (hopefully) once you get the system working as it originally did, you may not need to shut off the radiators.
There are a number of descriptions of old systems without traps in the literature section here, and maybe you will recognize your valves, and outlets.--NBC0 -
