I think I have a stream radiator. Definitely have a high pitched whistle problem!

Options
Hey,

I just moved into an old apartment complex and discovered a very annoying high pitched whistle when the radiator is in operation. It is very old, had two pipes, I think it is steam, is completely painted over, and has no adjustable posts as far as I can tell. Is there anyway to stop this whistle? I have included some pictures.

Thank you!

    Radiator

Well, at least there's a "trap" on it.

Is there also a lot of gurgling sounds?

I could not tell from the photo

whether it was steam or hot water.  The top of that "trap" looks like it could be a shorn-off angle-pattern valve.

Looks like hot water from the pipe sizes. Although, it also looks modified, so who knows how it was originally installed?

    Thanks

I have not noticed any gurgling. Just the whistle. The system was off earlier today and I had relief from it.

Is there anyway I can manually turn it off with the trap?

    Actually,

There is a bit of a dripping type sound.

    So

I think I might try to undue that top nut. Am I right in thinking that is the Lockshield cap? And underneath I will be able to turn it off?

I would be cautious. First, find out exactly what kind of system you have. If it's hot water, you'll make a huge mess trying to open any of the valves or piping.

    Ok.

I might call someone to look at it then. The landlord just purchased the property and didn't seem like he wanted to do anything when I mentioned the noise.

Would I call an HVAC specialist?

Where are you located? We may know a boiler expert who can help.
