Saw a one pipe steam system overfill till water came out of the upstairs radiator steam vent. Is there any way to protect against this happening?

Overfill protection
Keep the auto fill valved off, and check the water level frequently.
When it runs, does the water level disappear, and then come back later? If so, some cleaning of the boiler may be required. Improper piping can also shoot a lot of water up into the mains, or high pressure can cause the water to be pressured up into the wet returns.
Observation is the key.--NBC0
