Meter water feeder

I have a McDonnell & Miller 101A water feeder and I want to install a meter to monitor usage. Ideally I think this should be installed upstream, but this would take a bit more work because there is not enough space, so a lot of piping would need to be redone and the feeder would need to be moved. Alternatively I could put it downstream very easily. Are there any problems with this? I assume it is obviously best to keep it well above the boiler water line.
