Honeywell Thermostat (RTHL2310B1008) temperature higher than setting

Hello everyone, I've tried searching for the answer to my question but have had no success so here goes with my first post/question. I have a brand new Honeywell thermostat (model RTHL2310B1008; the 5-2 day programmable thermostat from Lowes) that constantly shows a higher temperature than it's actually set for. Example, I set the heat to 74 degrees but the heat comes on and stays on until it's much higher, like 77 degrees which is when it'll decide to turn off. It is controlling a simple gas HVAC system in the attic of the house.

I bought this new thermostat because the previous Honeywell thermostat did this same thing only the temperature range was more extreme so I thought it was simply starting to fail but it turns out to not be the case since I'm still experiencing this! In my research I've set the heating cycle rate to 3 but I've had no success yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
