This older Columbia COU-600 had served faithfully for decades, but it started to leak. The MegaSteam 629 was a perfect choice, since there is no natural gas in this area.

We had wanted to repipe this boiler for a while as there were several water pockets in the piping. Here is one of the worst ones- a 2-1/2" main coming in from the left, a 2" counterflow main rising from the bull of the tee and dumping condensate back into it, and the run continuing as 1-1/2"! No such thing as dry steam past this point.

    The new MegaSteam

in all its glory. We installed a 3-inch drop header, fixed the piping issues near the boiler, set the boiler up on blocks and eliminated the oil tank return line with a TigerLoop.

The system still has some water pockets out in the piping, but we'll get to them soon.

Now if Burnham ever got to where they wouldn't have a hissy fit about putting gas burners on the MegaSteam, we'd install a lot more of them.

    Nice

What's the warranty on the MegaSteam? Isn't it less than 10 years?

It has the usual 10-year warranty on the block

and a 5-year anti-corrosion warranty on top of that, which no one else offers. Burnham's main site appears to be down at the moment, but here is the brochure:

    Nice touch

I like the firomatic valve on the outlet side of the oil filter, nice touch for down the road service. That old Columbia looks just like a Utica, worked on a lot of those in the old days.

    It is a Utica

Columbia has re-badged Utica cast-iron boilers for several decades.

The TigerLoop people include a Firomatic with a 3/8x1/4 adapter that screws into the center tapping of the TigerLoop. But I like to have the valve a bit more accessible.

    Thanks For All the Comments

and questions.  It helps us learn, too!

There is not a close-up picture of the sightglass blowdown valve we added ( it is from Dahl), but in order to put it on without using a 1/4"street 45 ell, we ground off the unused door lug for clearance.  It just makes it, but there is much better flow.

In the past, we've brought out the sightglass fittings with extended nipples and tees to clear the door.  In this case, the support column was in the way.

While it was certainly convenient for running the electric wiring, that column caused a few problems positioning the boiler, as well as blocking the sightglass.
