This old American-Standard atmospheric rotted out above the waterline, in familiar fashion. Note the 2-inch risers connecting to the 2-1/2-inch steam mains. The system started out as a Kriebel but someone added Sarco radiator traps and a Sarco return trap. Yes, that is a Vaporstat.

    The new Smith/EZ-Gas

is a 6-section unit, with a 3-inch drop header. We kept the old Vaporstat and added a low-pressure gauge, and moved the sight glass for easier viewing by installing two 1/2" brass crosses. Gordon once again made the copper look like fine art.

The new-type EZ-Gas has a 24-volt gas valve and a transformer that replaces the 120-volt gas valve used previously. The airflow-proving switch is enclosed under the black cover. The motor, primary control and igniter are the same.

The owner has an Internet-enabled thermostat that requires constant 24-volt power to keep it online. Since you can't access both terminals of the transformer in this primary control, we added an isolation relay unit with its own transformer to take care of this.

In the pictures, the gauge is reading 3 ounces or so. That's all you need!

    Relay

Check out the Honeywell R8845U relay. It has a Common terminal for the WiFi thermostats and a control fuse.

I understand that the new Carlin burner does not need a combustioncchamber, does the new burner produce a higher static pressure than the standard EZ?

Don't know about the static pressure

have to look that up. We use the front refractory and target wall that come with the boiler, but not the rug. The front refractory protects the front plate which does not have water in it, and the target wall evens out the heat distribution so the back wall doesn't get slammed with too much heat. An oil burner would need the rug to reflect some heat back into the flame, but a gas burner does not.
