Radiator Closest To Return Leaking A lot of Water

Hi All-

I recently had someone replace my steam boiler. I went from a system with risers coming out of the side to a new Peerless with one riser coming off the top.

This is a small place with only 3 radiators. While all seem to hiss loud and I hear a lot of water hammer, the radiator closest to the return seems to start pissing out water from the vent when it is fully hot. I am thinking I am getting a lot of wet steam.

I can take some pictures if that will help. So far I tried a few vents, tilting the radiator, tilting the radiator and checking the valve to the radiator. I am thinking it may have something to do with the piping.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just incase it is hard to see. The pipe that T's into the riser is the return.

    It would have been nice

If the installer had casually glanced at the manufacturer's installation instructions and compared it to his install.

This is guaranteed to produce wet steam and waste energy!

If the paperwork provided with the boiler is on site (it should be) then look at the installation instructions. They are very specific about near-boiler piping.

As piped, you have a percolator.

    It has to be repiped.

    Bad Boiler Piping

    Hi-

As Terry mentioned your boiler piping is way out of spec. and unfortunately that putting it mildly.  It is VERY important that the boiler's near piping is sized and configured properly.

Here's a good video of Dan's which explains the importance of the boiler piping:

Do you have a copy of the Installation manual? If you need one, let us know and we'll see if we can find one for you.

It would also help if you could post some photos of: 1.  the back of the boiler (opposite side from the glass sight gauge) and 2. The piping above the boiler (the piping from the top of the boiler to the steam main(s)) Take them from back a ways so we can trace out the route of the piping.  We can always zoom in if we need to see detail.

Peerless are very good boilers so I'm sure after you get the piping straightened out you will be very satisfied with the system.

So before I did anything, I lowered the pressure on the honeywell box. That really had no affect at all.

I looked in the manual that came with the boiler and compared that to the piping the guy did. It looks like he made a return connect to the riser.

I took apart everything connected to the riser and supply pipe and re piped per the manufac diagram.

I remade the hartford using a close nipple instead of the 3 inch he had and I located it within 4 inches of the water mark as per PB's instructions.

Basically the only thing I did was re do the returns and it took me 12 hours. My back is sore from swinging a 20 pound 3 foot pipe wrench all day. I shouldve went with the aluminum.

The pics above are from before i repiped everything for the return.

The next step is the riser and header.
