Weird Gas Fireplace Problem

in Gas Heating
Hello,
We have a Lennox MPD 3530 gas fireplace at home. It was put in six years ago. We occasionally use it every winter and never bother to turn off the pilot. Yesterday we tried to use it first time this season. When I turned on the wall switch, the pilot went out. I was scared. When I opened the bottom, and saw the gas valve was in upright position, which means gas was off. I was so puzzled now. If the gas valve is in off position, how pilot can stay lit.
Anyone has clue about this? Thanks.
