I have a building with an existing return riser for condensate. It used to go vertically from the 14th floor to the second, where it teed together with one other return riser. The one riser went into the basement, and took a long, minimally pitched trip back to the vacuum condensate pump. (old Nash) I drew up the previous and existing conditions, see attached. The condensate header is piped to the vacuum and the condensate pipe (which returns to the tank in the next room). If the valve shown is open, then there could be turbulence or short circuiting, preventing condensate from fully returning to the pump. They are getting the typical hammer at start-up, at the seventh floor. I have my opinions on what to do. (Traps need to be changed, pitch radiators, alter control sequence to run the vacuum before boiler firing) Any thoughts on where the problem is, or how to alleviate it?
