Heating Pros,
I'm trying to convert from old 1.5" cast iron pipe (1.9" O.D.) to 1.5" copper. I THINK all I need is a female copper adapter like:
<a href="http://www.pexsupply.com/Cello-WP3-24-1-1-2-Copper-x-Female-Adapter-989000-p">http://www.pexsupply.com/Cello-WP3-24-1-1-2-Copper-x-Female-Adapter-989000-p</a>
Is that ok? Are there any issues connecting copper to old cast iron? Please see attached photos.
Thanks,
Jay

Copper steam line
Where is this pipe in the system? Steam supplies should never be copper, although the returns below the waterline can be copper. The problem is in the different coefficiencies of expansion between copper and steel.
Most good hardware stores should be able to cut and thread pipe to order, and supply the needed union.--NBC0 -
Not steam...
Thanks Nicholas - these pipes are both supply and return to one zone of my house.. It's not a steam system, but rather hot-water. I'm trying to somehow get to normal 1.5" copper to tie into the boiler. I took off 90 deg. elbow fittings because they were pointing away from where I needed, and thought I'd take the opportunity to replace with "straight-through" connectors - just not sure which/where to buy.
If I can get away with a copper female to iron, that seems to be the easiest. Right?0 -
Brass
For copper to iron, use a brass fitting as a transition. Use teflon tape and pipe dope on the iron-to-brass joint to prevent galling.0
