carlyle o6e compressor - unloaders replaced

a compressor was diagnosed and it was found that both unloaders should be replaced.
this followed a finding that there was excess oil in the sump (there is a need to assess oil in system and recover possible remaining excess oil after removing some).
what would cause unloaders to need replacement (have heard its unusual to replace unloaders)
how would a malfunctioning unloader impact compressor operations?
thanks
