are there special challenges to a large split AC system when cooling a large auditorium with high ceilings (1400 people).

    Is this a new project, or are you trying to fix an existing system?  In a new design, radiant ceiling (and possibly wall) cooling can significantly reduce airflow needs.  For either case, you might want to consider computational flow dynamics.
