Steam Assoc Planning Meeting...June 21, Chicago

Just received confirmation of a meeting with 6 representatives of RSES on June 21, 2013 at their headquarters in 1911 Rohlwing Rd., Rolling Meadows, IL.   All those that want to see steam heating not only survive but grow should attend this groundbreaking meeting.  Chairman Roger Hensley, Mark Lowry and other RSES representatives will be flying in from throughout North America for this meeting.  The focus of this first meeting is collaboration of training/educational initiatives for steam equipment, which is to provide the foundation for further endeavors.

Ladies and Gentlemen....Your attendance is imperative to show that we....the steam heating professional community...are serious about revitalizing the industry.  The excellent folks at RSES are very excited about this prospect (Steamhead can also attest to this) but we need to show that they have our support.  A light lunch will be provided and then we can delve into steam!

O Hare is the closest Airport to their facility.  Come for the meeting and then enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes of Chicago for the weekend....Millennial Park, Navy Pier, Willis (Sears) Tower, Grant Park, The Art Institute, River Tours, jazz, blues, symphony

I'd love to come! I would be coming for Long Island if anyone else is traveling in the area?

    I'll be there, of course

looking forward to meeting JStar, Danny and everyone else I haven't met yet.

For those of us who like to fly Southwest- note that they use Midway airport rather than O'Hare. This is further away from the meeting site than O'Hare is, but if the fare difference is big enough it might be worth it.

These are being worked on.  We will probably join in the block of rooms RSES is reserving for all their people.  Transportation is also is being worked out.

This is the organization that Steamhead and I addressed last fall. However, they are not just refrigeration.  Their main specialty is training and certification programs throughout North America for all HVAC  They used to conduct steam training but "they" (ubiquitous) said steam would be gone soon.  Well, that was a couple decades ago and its not gone, and if we get moving, it will probably see a resurgence in growth as research work in efficiency advances to the point of seeing it's inherent efficiency and comfort benefits.

This could be a good fit,

but please bear with me for a bit...

Today's modulating/condensing hot water boilers are the result of roughly 30 years of technological evolution.  The combined power of mathematical analysis, materials science, and information technology applied to the heating and distribution of water has been truly impressive.  Current real-world efficiencies are approaching theoretical maxima, for which we should heartily congratulate ourselves.

Given that their entire industry depends for its very existence on the magic of phase change, RSES might actually understand the opportunity here.  Accounting for the general acceleration of technological progress over time, I'd guess that ten years of serious technological progress on steam might have quite an impact on our world.  Why not?

    What you said.

Good points. Phase change is the key to superior thermal transfer! Heat pipes. and the new heat sinks for electronics with internal refrigerant filled microchannels for enhanced heat conductivity are all reliant on this fact.

Yes, I agree. A good fit for this organization.

Light lunch is at 12:30 and meeting starts at 1:30

Here are some links to transit maps for Chicago area.  The CTA blue line runs right to O' hare and downtown Chicago.  CTA Orange Line(?)  is Midway.

For those driving in from the South or east,   The South Shore line runs from South Bend, IN into downtown and then you can pick up the blue line from there.    Never taken this route, but could be handy if you don't want to drive into the metro area.  Of course Amtrak also goes into Chicago.

    Video conferencing

If video conferencing were available, the audience participation could be greater.

Will any reps from the manufacturers be there ie. Hoffman, gorton, Honeywell, peerless, burnham, Weil-maclain, slant-fin, M-M, etc?

And another event on Saturday, both planned long ago. Thanks for thinking of me!

    Firing up the boiler

We're on the way. Flying down the interstate at the speed of steam. Efficiency.
  • Oh Yeah,

Just had 4 more sign up today and last night.    We've got some of the best and brightest in the industry arriving here in Chicago and a number of home grown.  Frank and I will probably be at RSES around 11:00.

Can't spell team without an s

Thanks for the excellent meeting, the supremely wonderful company and the all the steamy little chitchat that I doubt is available anywhere else in the universe except for these unique gatherings.

Steam heat. If we don't call it forced steam - it's because you don't have to clobber customers on the head to tell them they will like it. And maybe that's our problem in this industry, the RSES people and all of us are genuinely way too nice. We're looking forward to joining the RSES.

Thanks for the food and the doughnuts. The bread from the caterer was splendidly done; I'll bet it was baked in a steam oven.

Looking forward to the next meeting/objective. Gotta keep the momentum going. It was a great experience to be a part of something like this. I bet you won't find another group of tradesmen willing to work together in this same way. I expect great things to come of this. On to the next step!
