Looks like it forms a water seal. No moving parts.0 -

It's missing the thermostatic element
you can see a bit of it still screwed into the underside of the trap's cover.

works the same as any thermostatic trap, but sits sideways, thats all..theory was it would stay cleaner that way..gwgillplumbingandheating.com
