Can you sell heating oil?

This is an attempt to help my sister who is a financially struggling college student recoup a large expense this year.

There was a problem with one of the appliances and the large tank in the

basement needed to be refilled. Shortly after they filled it with

heating oil the landlord decided to put in a new heating system

altogether. This system does not use heating oil. So, now the tank is

full and sitting there useless and it seems to me like there should be

some way to sell the heating oil. I understand that there are strict

regulations on the handling and transport of this kind of material, but

that doesn't mean it is impossible.

Any suggestions on how or to whom she might be able to sell the fuel to? ...or at least why she can not.<span style="color:#000000">

    Oil

I ran into something similar in 2011 when I found out our boiler was rotted after buying almost a full tank of oil. After converting over to NG I had 200-250 gallons of oil to get rid of.

Every place I called wanted $1-$2 a gallon to remove the oil that I had just paid $3.40 a gallon for. I ended up giving it to a neighbor for free and we pumped it into his tank using a small 12V pump.

Single pipe 392sqft system with an EG-40 rated for 325sqft and it's silent and balanced at all times.

    Make a call

Try calling the company you bought the oil from.  In our area companies will buy the oil back at the price per gallon paid minus a recovery fee.  The fee is normally $100.00 so if you have more than 30 gallons or so you make out okay.

    Forgot to ask?

I forgot to ask in the previous post; is the oil hers to sell?  Did she purchase it?

    try........

Assuming it's hers to sell, try a couple local mechanic shops, especially a truck mechanic.  If they have a waste oil heater, they may come out and give you some money, and pump it out.

Most oil companys wont take the oil, because it's now mixed in with everything that has been the tank for years, and now is considered waste oil.

Ask the oil company anyway.  I'm sure the landlord has considered removing the tank, and they, or the company they use to remove tanks, may offer a cheaper price if they are getting a full tank of heating oil.

There was an error rendering this rich post.
