Boiler Make-up water from Domestic Hot Water System???

I recently encountered in which the boiler make up water was being taken from the domestic hot water system. There was a RPZ provided\, but I have never seen this before. Has anyone ever encountered this before or possibly was this done at one point in history? I am assuming who ever installed the hot water system assumed if they did this they would be able to maintain HWS temperatures constant. Or maybe it was done in error. This is not the first time I see this.
