Sizing issue for replacement steam boiler for single pipe steam system;
JIK
Member Posts: 20
I am replacing a steam boiler for a single pipe steam system, with the necessary btu sizing needed being 550,000.
This calculation was double checked by a top steam system installer, who also came up with the same EDR calculation.
I prefer a Weil- Mc. Brand, but have only been able to find a 500,000 btu version available.
Does anyone know of a viable alternative in a Weil model, or suggestions for a substitute solution in the 550,000 range?
Thanks in advance.

I think you're trying to avoid this kind of answer, but ....
Why are you even talking in terms of BTUs and not square feet of steam? Every boiler is different and the matching the BTUs is not as important as matching the sq. ft./EDRContact John "JohnNY" Cataneo, NYC Master Plumber, Lic 1784

sizing steam boilers
JNY is correct, there are also other things to consider, are the pipes insulated or are they uninsulated to name one. Dan wrote a wonderful article some time ago with reguard to properly sizing a steam boiler replacement. I wish I was good enough at this computer stuff to know how to post it for you. Perhaps Dan will chime in on this

All these factors have been considered; the only remaining issue is that the boiler necessary
To fulfill these calculations overall equals 550,000 btu, and wishing to go with a Weil- McClain brand, I find 500,000 btu but need 550,000.
A discrepancy of 50,000 or 10% for me is an unacceptably large under sizing relative to my needs.
So, for the moment taking into account our calculations utilizing Dan's overall recommendations and sizing calculation worksheets, what to do to achieve 550,000 size boiler to accurately fit my overall requirement?
I am looking for a specific suggestion as to the make and model boiler configuration best suited to this workload.0 -
what fuel
are you using? What EDR did you calculate? There is a Weil for the job, I just need to know these two things.Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.
