im having a issue with existing boilers with water hammer by the hartford loop....i feel i can fix the problem by putting a close nipple and lowering the tee a feww inches....i have a picture where my finger is pointing that is where the water line is .....i know the piping is wrong as far as the header with no swing joint , i usually go 3 '' with the header at this size....just want some insight with this water hammer problem....thank you Paul S

    water hammer

yup thats your problem, and the fix IS to lower the T to 2 inch below water line , and close nipple that connection

    Hartford

Funny thing...I've never had noise problems with a tee that was too high or too low, or even with a long nipple on the loop.

Does the water feed tie into the top of the loop? Does it make noise when it's being fed with water? When during the cycle does it happen?

it happens in the middle of the cycle....when i feed water the hammering STOPS....there sre three more boilers to the right they are all piped identical....all 4 boilers have hammering in the same area...hartford loop....Paul S

    Water Feed:

In no way am I a steam pro. But, is that an unusual water fill or an unusual way to feed water to the boilers? Where they all do the same thing, I just wonder. The location of the water feed looks like it is above the boiler. How does it know when or how much water to add?

Is that a "normal" way to feed a steam boiler? At the top of a Hartford Loop? What happens when you shut off the water feed to the boiler. Does it stop? The fact that all four boilers do the same thing make me think that it is a piping problem with all and not just one. And someone else said that they had never seen a problem with a piping arrangement like that before. Someone re-piped recently and put the union in. Was it you or someone before you?

It sounds like it has been an on going problem. Look at how it is fed. IMO.

    Interesting.

    I fixed

The union....it was leaking...the water feeder feeds water to the lowest minimum water when the low water cutoff calls for it....I'm getting hammering at Hartford loop in All four boilers....I believe if I drop the tees a few inches so that its at least two inches below water line and put close nipples at the loops or a wye fitting it will stop hammering...I just wanted some insight from other people if that will fix problem...do not want to do job and still get hammering.....Paul S

    Do yourself a favor

When doing the work add a drain for the wet return so you can easily get at any crud that settles there. Years from now you will be glad it's there.

    What about

Raising that a few more inches and making a Giffords loop instead?
