Carlin EZ gas...

I have recently used a Carlin ez gas in a 3 section Smith steam boiler. All went pretty well and the combustion numbers were all w/in spec. 10 days go by.... Homeowner calls Friday night saying the burner has locked out. hits reset all OK. I go by Saturday and the burner locks out again. I try to get a reading w/ my multimeter using the plug in harness they give you... every time I plug it in or leave it plugged in the burner drops out and locks up.... Other than that it runs fine... Bad primary control?

What were the flame sensor readings? Is the gapping correct? Fuel pressure? Combustion numbers? Draft?

I never could get....

a flame sensor reading because each time the probe was plugged in the burner would drop out.

It runs ok w/o the probe plugged in. Just the 1 lockout.

O2..5.4, CO2 5.7, CO 16ppm, EA 30%,    7/32 orifice clocked @ 87,096 btu

Smith series 8-3  w/ B diffuser plate.

EZ Gas:

Because I have not had the opportunity to work on an EZ-Gas but I have sold a ton of EZ-1 Oil Burners, consider this.

If Carlin is using a 60200 control or a similar CCT controller with a cad cell, I have had to do this when the cad cell reading was poor.

Remove the cad cell wires from the controller and connect them to a Multi tester. I prefer an Analog for this. Have a set of jumper clips available and connected to one side of the F-F terminals. As soon as you get combustion/fire, connect the other lead to the other "F-F" terminal. The control will now think it sees a flame. You can now do adjustments that will be recorded on the Multi tester. If the Ohm reading is too high, you will see it. You can make adjustments to get the Ohm reading down.

If you can't get an OHM reading, it's probably too high. You hear of guys painting the inside of tubes to increase reflection. This is why. You can't diagnose this problem with a analyzer. You can get perfect numbers and still have not enough flame showing to satisfy the control. If the Ohms are OK, then, you have eliminated that side of the problem. 

I had an EZ-1 oil with a Power Venter that was pulling the flame from the retention head but I couldn't see it. I found it with an Ohm meter. Firedragon has a good posting about it on his web site.

By the manual

CO2 minimum is 8.5% and 7/32 orifice is for 100000 btus. Outlet pressure on the gas valve should be 3.5" wc(min=3.2,max=3.8). Ten days tells you something.

the EZ-Gas uses a flame-rod sensor with a matching primary control. Check the flame rod to see if it hasn't come loose and changed position.

update...

my CO2 # was a mis-type... should have typed 8.7.

 I talked w/ Ron form Carlin. The flame sensor tool has to be plugged in to the voltmeter, On in mV DC and ready to go... otherwise it breaks the circuit and shuts it down.

Someday, I'll get to see more of one than just sitting on a table at a trade show.

Where I work, any oil boiler, no matter how efficient, will get ripped out and a gas/Hydro Air will be installed with one big rfeturn over the air handler. Its a good trade off?

Switching to gas probably is

switching from radiators to hydro-air definitely is not.
