I just decided to look up one of the patent numbers on a Gorton vent and was kind of amazed to find out Edward Jacobus designed the overal type of vent quite a bit before Gorton.

Notice it references two Jacobus patents at the bottom.

I'm actually not sure what the Gorton patent is about as it seems like the same design Edward Jacobus had.

Either way, technically Gorton's are a ripoff of the Maid-O-Mist though I doubt the originals had plastic internals.

    Before lawyers

All of this happened a long time before lawyers got their tentacles into industry. Patents used to grant you sole rights for a period of time and then all bets were off. That meants people could build on others ideas, the result was an explosion of products in the 19th and 20th century. Now we have been reduced to corporations trying to patent words, God forbid that someone bother to come up with a new idea.

I assume Gorton saw the design and figured they could make it better. I don't know how long the MOMs will work compared to the Gortons but I know they work just as well.

    Gorton's patent

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it had something to do with fish sticks. Using tartar sauce, maybe?

Cant just be a coincidence that both Jacobus and Gorton were from the same town...

    Gorton

    This is from the Library

Take a look at page 14. This catalog is from 1926.

    Maybe Jacobus worked for Gorton.
