Balancing radiator with Gorton valves

I have a question and I’m hoping someone with experience will be able to help guide me.

Single pipe steam system. 2” main pipes. 1 main: 50’ the other is: 25’.

The mains do not have any vents (it seems like they never had it - house built in 1920's). I’m trying to balance the radiators with Gorton radiator valves (and see if I can balance it without main vets).

Question: should I begin with Gorton #5’s (on radiators closest to boiler) and work my way up to #6 and #c for further radiators (as per Gorton’s chart), or, since there are no main vets, I should be starting off with #6 or #c – since this is the only way the air is getting out of the pipes? Or maybe there is another option?

Any thoughts or experience will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    You Need Main Vents!

Hi- You REALLY need main vents! With main vents, steam quickly fills the mains so that all the radiator laterals receive steam at approximately the same time. Relying on just radiator vents to vent the system most likely means that the radiators will be vented sequentially and will be almost impossible to balance properly.
