LOUD air vent!

I am slowly replacing air vents on my radiators as the old ones are failing. I just replaced the Main vents with 3 new Vari-Rite 35s.

In addition, I have been installing Vent-Rite 1As on the radiators. One of these new 1As causes the radiator to make a very loud "clank" when it opens and closes, which seems to be frequently.

This particular radiator is on the third floor.

I have the pressuretrol set to 2 with a negative differential of .75.

Thx for any thoughts!

Ps - how can I best CONFIRM that my pressuretrol is functioning?.

Pps - air Vent-Rite vents quality vents?

    Venting choices

When you say your radiator vents are failing, is that because of their not closing and blowing steam? Probably your pressure is too high, and the old ones were not able to operate due to pressure. Get a good low-pressure gauge (gauge store.com-0-3 psi), and you will know what the pressure is in ounces.

You will need good vents such as gorton #2's on the mains. Keep adding venting until the back-pressure during the start of steaming is under 2 ounces, showing the air being let out with no resistance. I would then put Hoffman 40's on the ground floor, and 2nd with slightly larger gortons on the third. I have noe experience with your make of vent, but if they came from the big box, they should be replaced with better quality.

Is your waterline steady, and clean? Are your pipes insulated? These are factors in making dry steam. For the moment, you can improve things by taking care of the pressure, main venting, and insulation. --NBC

    Click clank

I have not used the vent-rite 1As but I assume they function the same as the Hoffmans overall and those click and clank by nature.  Its how they function and I noticed some were louder than others.  Seems like the only silent vent is Gorton which I am slowly switching over to.  Though I am switching due to other problems, I got used to the clicking and clanking.

They only click and clank when steam gets to them and causes them to close.  If others are not making any noise feel them, I bet they are ice cold while the clicking one is hot meaning steam is hitting it.
