LWCO Clogged

My LWCO is completely clogged. Is there anything that I can do during the heating season to try to unclog it? Or is the LWCO only serviceable when the boiler has been off for a long while?

How fearful should I be that I cannot blow down the boiler?

I'm not too concerned about being without boiler water because there is a second LWCO that should keep me safe.

  • Plugged lwco

Most lwco's need some sort of regular maintenance, and so if one is plugged, do you think the other one will be able to work having also been neglected.

You never want to have a non-working lwco, with the possibility of dry-firing. As soon as possible, do the annual maintenance, as specified by the manufacturer, and verify weekly that they work.--NBC

    lwco

Lwco's need to be blown down weekly per  most manufact. ( Mcdonnell Miller ).  Strainer basket assy should be cleaned or replaced at least twice a year if not more often. Once a year I will completely take apart lwco and clean out bowl and flush out blow down valve.

There was an error rendering this rich post.

    LWCO

I'll second NBC on this. With the one LWCO in bad shape, due to lack of maintenance, one would have to question whether the other LWCO isn't in the same shape.

Fearful?   Do a site search using the phrase-  "Boiler Explosions".  Boiler safety devices (LWCO, Safety Valve) aren't something you neglect!
