Surging

I had great success preventing boiler surge by placeing a swing check valve and a 3 inch brass nipple at the return port on the boiler. The check valve prevents boiler water from being sent up the return during the surge condition.

    Gravity ? No chack Valves!

On a gravity system putting a check valve in the return is not a good idea. See Page 62-63 in "The Lost Art of Steam Heating" If you're getting surging, you probably need a boiler flush and a skim.
