One-pipe system with dry returns?0 -
They need to be at the end
if they are close to the boiler on the supply side they only vent the air to that point. Do you have returns coming out of the crawl space or is it a counter flow system with no return?Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.

IT IS A ONE PIPE SYSTEM WTH GRAVITY RETURN AT THE END OF MAINS THERE IS A SMALLER DIA PIPE OFF THE BOTTOM THAT RUNS OUT OF THE CRAWL SPACE DOWN TOWARDS THE FLOOR TO BOILER (DRY RETURN TO WET RETURN?) CAN I VENT THIS PIPE AS LONG AS IT"S ABOVE THE BOILER WATER LINE?0 -
Yes that is the pipe you
want the vent to be on. 16" to 18" before the first vertical drop if you can get it. Closer to the crawl space will keep the return slightly cooler then closer to the boiler. You also need to make sure it is high enough where the water line will not reach it when the boiler is under pressure. 28" above the water line or higher for most systems is what I would do.Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.

Look
at the first picture for a 1-pipe system. In your case keep the vent as far back towards the crawl space as possible. http://www.gogeisel.com/geiselonline/support/Hoffman/Steam_Vents/Basic_Steam_Heating_Systems_1_2_Pipe.pdf0 -
