pigtail location

I have often raised the pigtail and gauges out of the muck and grime near the glass on a steam boiler and put them up higher to keep them clean on a boiler that may not be maintained , is this OK or is this a problem with design with the manufacturer or a steam plant design ?  Why do some boilers come with them in the water level or just above and then they get mucked up when no one cleans the boiler and then the pressuretrol fails to shut off the boiler making it a tense situation . Why not raise them up above the boiler ??

    Believe It or Not

All too often, the placement of pressuretrols and other "gingerbread" on a package boiler is determined by the packaging engineer and marketing.

If these controls were placed in their optimal position on the "package", the warehouse would not be able to stack enough boilers high enough.

If the manufacturers don't install the controls as part of the package, the hacks whine that it's too much work to put 'em on.

    "Do it yourself boiler kit....

                                                  (some) assembly required."

So, you are definitely doing the right thing by raising the controls out of the muck.
