I've worked in the HVAC field for 25 years and have not come across the attached valve. It is installed in a steam line at a hospital in Vermont. The inlet side is attached to the building steam main at about 15 psi.The discharge side is piped up through the roof and emits a constant flow of steam to the outside. The Owner has done some research and has the understanding the valve serves as a pressure relief valve, in some capacity. The handwheel has cast lettering to turn clockwise to increase pressure.
I would appreciate any explanation on the purpose of this valve. Obviously it's very old and probably obsolete. The Owner is wondering if it can be removed and capped.

back pressure valve
HI, That looks to be a back pressure valve. They were used when then building had its own power plant and used the waste steam to heat the building. However if there was a high demand for power, and low demand for heat there would be excess steam, and when pressure built up in the heating system the valve would discharge the excess. - Tom0 -
I think you nailed it, Tom

They still are--what's left of them.
Crane acquired them in the 60s, and they in turn acquired Chicago Heater in the 80s. Now they're called Crane-Cochrane Environmental. They moved their offices to Norristown when they closed their manufacturing facility. (Wonder where they moved that to.)Just another DIYer | King of Prussia, PA

Thanks for your help.I will investigate if the hospital ever generated their own power, which would have been years ago. Sounds like lots of energy wasted over the years.0 -
