Cutting Boiler Pipes in Basement
GISBoy
Member Posts: 1
Is it okay to use a sawzall on the old metal boiler pipes in the basement? I've not cut through these before and wouldn't mind some advice. I've seen a recommendation for using blades at 14 teeth per inch.
Any other advice is appreciated as I'll be working in a crawl space that allows me to at least sit on my rear comfortably while cutting. However, there seems to be a lot of rather large pipes (2 in or larger with valves).
I also have a large boiler sitting way back in the crawl space. The ONLY way for me to get it out of here is to somehow break it down. Any advice there would be much appreciated but my primary issue is the pipes... for right now.
Thanks!

Two Hammers
A Sawzall with 14tpi works well. You could also try smashing the fittings using a ballpeen and 3lb sledge. Place the sledge on the backside and hit the fitting w/ the peen side of the hammer. Just my $.02...0 -

Can't tell you about the OP...
...but I have an old monoflo convector-based system that I replaced with radiant ceilings. The pipe serves no purpose and it's in the way of finishing the basement, so out it goes.
I've been using a metal-cutting abrasive blade in my circular saw. Not pleasant. Didn't expect sawzall would work well on steel, but I suppose I can give it a try...0 -
Portaband
Best way to cut pipes is with a portaband... aka Portable band saw. There was an error rendering this rich post.
