HydroTherm Boiler on a TIMER switch?

I just moved into a rental property with a HydroTherm PB Series Boiler. I am in no way familiar with HVAC and really need some help. Every home I have lived in has had a red on/off switch that controls the furnace/boiler. However, this one has a timer at the top of the basement steps, instead of an on/off switch. The boiler will only fire up when this timer is activated. Other words, I have NO heat and NO water unless I turn this timer on. The timer is also only 60 minutes.

Has anyone ever seen this type of set-up? Is this timer supposed to be the on/off for the boiler? Can I change it over to an on/off switch so I can have heat & hot water???

ANY help and suggestions would be appreciated. I do not have the money to call a service tech in to look at it so I'm trying to get some information, advise! Thanks!

Desparately seeking heat & hot water for my family.....

    I would

contact your landlord. Is heat and hot water included in your rent? If it is something that you are paying for, you should have more control over it. Also that should not take place of a system emergency switch. If someone has altered that, that's a no-no. I wouldn't do anything without checking with the owner first. The previous tenant may have put that in themselves.

I've seen this too many times

typically put in by cheap landlords who also don't want to maintain their systems. We get the call as no-heat, but when we see something like this we wonder if we're going to get paid.......
