Testing gas pipe:

I usually test gas pipe with my air compressor set to 5# and leave it off to the gas controls or disconnected and capped.
This came up. I piped up some gas that I want to test because there are a lot of leak sources. It's LP. I asked someone who installs and services a lot of LP only. He said to just turn on the gas. That way I won't overpressure anything. There is a 2" Maxitrol in the gas train.
I thought of using my air compressor set to some low pressure (5# or less, and feeding it through a 1/2" Maxitrol regulator, which I could set to 14" or such, use my manometer and soap, and not be worrying about loose gas if I have to fix a leak.
What do others do in this situation? I have test ports all over so I can get clever with the air. I'd rather not test with the gas. And break anything.
